This Is Childhood: ONE
Childhood (and it’s ensuing companion, parenthood) comprises of millions of moments–the anticipation of firsts, the trepidation of lasts and all the living we do in-between. Those days string together forming months that stumble into (gasp) years.
Years and years of runny noses, books read while snuggled under cozy covers, orthodontist appointments, velvety skin, just-out-of-the-tub round bodies wrapped in Dreft-scented towels, snotty tissues (or, in Henry’s case, snotty hands and sleeves), wrinkles (mine, not theirs), spent bottles of Ibuprofen (and sometimes wine (mine, not theirs)), small arms wrapped tightly in I’ll-never-let-go-of-you-hugs–adult hearts wishing fiercely this sentiment would last forever, first steps, last Christmases believing in Santa, friendships, whispered supplications of piercing gratitude, play dates, I-Love-Yous, wiggly teeth, lost teeth, lost sleep and loads of laundry.
This is Childhood–and I am so beyond fortunate that I got a ring-side seat.
A group of writers (of which I am so honored and thrilled to be part) will commemorate the years of childhood, from One to Ten. Each week, one writer will share their words.
Today, Aidan Donnelley Rowley delights about the tender age of One.
Sigh.
Each following Tuesday, another writer will contribute their voice as we celebrate the varied, gorgeous, evanescent ages of Childhood.
ONE – Aidan Donnelley Rowley
TWO – Kristen Levithan
THREE – Nina Badzin
FOUR – Galit Breen
FIVE – Allison Slater Tate
SIX – Bethany Meyer
SEVEN – Tracy Morrison
EIGHT – Amanda Magee
NINE – Moi
TEN – Lindsey Mead
I hope you’ll join us.
